Motion Reporting

Motion Reporting is a powerful capability which enables you to define, track, and measure the impact of your motions on your key business goals and KPIs. In Motion Reporting, you can visualize and quantify how participation in your motions has impacted the behavior and characteristics of your customers. Once a user or account interacts with a motion, their data will be added to each report for that motion.

This article focuses on two key experiences: the Report Builder, and the Report page.

Getting Started with the Report Builder

To get started, create a new Motion or open an existing Motion. Once you’ve saved your Motion, select Configure Report to open the report builder.

Note: it’s a best practice to configure motion reports before you run the motion. Magnify will automatically begin tracking metrics in your reports once the motion runs, so building the report before you run the motion ensures you have the largest possible historical data set.

Creating Metrics

Selecting From Saved Data Sources

When you open the report builder, you'll see two key features: Saved Data Sources and Report Metrics. Saved Data Sources provides a list of all the data fields that Magnify is currently saving with each data ingest run. Think of this as a list of data fields for which Magnify has history. If you use one of these fields on your report, it is possible that the first time you view the report, there will already be historical data about the motion participants (accounts and users).

Adding New Metrics

If the field you need doesn’t appear in the Saved Data Sources list, that’s ok! We’ll add it to the report, and Magnify will begin saving historical values for that field once you’ve saved the report. Start by selecting from your list of integrated platforms under Data Source. This will feel like a very familiar experience if you’ve built Segments or rules in Magnify. You can identify the data field you’d like to report on either by selecting a data source, then an Object, then the Field, or by searching for the name of the field.

Note: Magnify can exclusively report on numeric data fields at this time. Those are fields whose values are numbers (e.g., Annual Revenue, CSAT score, etc.). Any grey fields on the list are not numeric fields and cannot be used in a report.

Once you’ve selected the data field you’ll see Aggrelation level populate with one of Account-level or User-level. This is a read-only field; its purpose is to inform you about whether this data field pertains to accounts or users. If the field is aggregated across accounts, you’ll find columns relating to the field (Starting, Current, Change) on the Accounts table on the Reports page. Similarly, fields aggregated across users will have columns on the Users table on the Reports page. More on tabular reports later in this article.

Follow these steps to finish defining your report metric:

  1. Choose an Aggregator:
    1. Count
      1. Definition: provide a count of every instance of the field with a value
      2. Example: Count of NPS Score. Provides a way to track how many NPS scores have been submitted.
    2. Sum
      1. Definition: adds all values together
      2. Examples:
        1. Sum of Annual Revenue - total annual revenue from all accounts who have participated in the motion.
        2. Sum of API calls - for an expansion motion, this would show whether motion participants are increasing their integration usage after participating in the motion.
        3. Sum of Session Duration (minutes) - total time spent in your app by the users who’ve participated in the motion.
    3. Average
      1. Definition: the mean of all values. Calculates (Sum of all values) ÷ (Count of values)
      2. Examples:
        1. Average Contract Value ($) - typical deal size among accounts who’ve participated in the motion.
        2. Average of Session Duration (minutes) - typical engagement depth among users who’ve participated in the motion.
    4. Min
      1. Definition: the lowest numeric value of motion participants. This can be useful in identifying risk areas or minimum thresholds.
      2. Examples:
        1. Min NPS Score (0-10) - lowest sentiment/contentment among accounts in the motion.
        2. Min Health Score (%) - for a health improvement motion, this would provide an indication of whether the motion successfully raises the floor for at-risk accounts.
    5. Max
      1. Definition: the highest numeric value of motion participants. This can be helpful in identifying peak performance or potential.
      2. Examples:
        1. Max Monthly Revenue ($) - best revenue month among accounts in the segment.
        2. Max Health Score (0-100) - best health rating among accounts in the segment.
        3. Max Daily Task Count (#) - most productive user in a given day since the motion ran.
  2. Name your metric - By default this is the name of the chosen datafield; however, you can modify it to best describe the meaning of the metric.
  3. Define a goal (optional) - Set a target value for your metric. You can use this optional feature to track performance against your goals.

Limitations

  • You can add up to 10 metrics per motion.
  • You cannot add the same metric+aggregator combination twice. It would just be a redundant report anyway!
  • Once you’ve saved your report, you will only be able to edit the metric name and goal (not the field or aggregator). If you’d like to choose a different field and/or aggregator, just create a new metric and remove the existing one. Remember that this may have implications for how much history Magnify has saved if the new metric you’ve chosen wasn’t on the list of Saved Data Sources.
  • Note: Removing a data field from a report in Magnify does not automatically purge any stored history Magnify has for the field. Even after the data field has been removed from all reports across all motions, Magnify will continue to store historical data for the field for another 180 days. After 180 days of the field not being used on any reports, the field will be removed from Saved Data Sources and its historical data will be purged.

The Motion Report Page

The Motion Reporting page contains several key components: Metric Charts, Operational Stats and Actions metrics, Accounts tabular report, and Users tabular report.

Metric Charts

Each configured metric displays as an interactive line chart showing:

  • X-axis: Time
  • Y-axis: Metric value
  • Goal line: If you set a goal, it appears as a reference line
  • Hover details: Hover over any data point to see the exact date and value

New data points are added to charts daily; however, this is dependent upon data ingestion schedule. If Magnify is unable to ingest data from one or more integrated platforms on a given day, that day’s data may not appear on the chart. Once connection is re-established, a data point will be added the next day on which data ingestion is completed.

Time Range Options

Select from the following time ranges for each chart:

  • 1 month - Last 30 days with typically daily data points
  • Year to date (YTD) - From January 1st to today
  • All time - All available data with weekly averages

Note: Charts update daily and display metrics filtered to motion participants only.

Operational Stats and Actions Metrics

The Operational Stats section of the Reports page provides a summary view of the population of the segment, and the portion of that population which has interacted with the motion.

The Actions section provides a summary of the number of actions which have fired for accounts or users in the motion. If the motion includes the Magnify Send Email action, you can find email event details including how many emails were sent, delivered, opened, clicked, unsubscribed, and more.

For motions leveraging Magnify's Email Service, this section will display metrics related to all emails that were triggered within the motion. If multiple emails are triggered within a single motion, this section will display the total aggregated metrics.

  • Sent: The number of emails requested to be delivered.
  • Delivered: The number of emails where the receiving server accepted the message.
  • Opens: The number of unique recipients who opened emails.
  • Clicks: The number of unique recipients who clicked links in an email.
  • Bounces: The number of emails where the receiving server denied the message.
  • Spam Reports: The number of emails marked as spam within a recipient's email client

Accounts Table

The Accounts table shows all accounts that have participated in your motion with the following information:

  • Account Name - Clickable link to the account's detail page
  • Current ARR - Annual Recurring Revenue
  • Participated Since - Date the account first entered the motion

Metric Columns

For each configured account-level metric, you'll see three columns:

  • Starting - Value when the account first participated
  • Current - Most recent value
  • Change - Difference between starting and current

Users Table

The Users table displays all individual users who have participated in your motion:

  • User Name - The user's display name
  • Account Name - Clickable link to their account
  • Participated Since - Date the user first entered the motion
  • Motion Step - The last block in the motion the user interacted with (could be a rule or action)
  • Motion Step Date - When they reached that step
  • Magnify Emails Sent - Count of emails sent via Magnify Email to the user by this motion. Similar columns will be automatically added for other email-sending actions.

Metric Columns

Similar to the Accounts table, each user-level metric shows:

  • Starting - Value when the user first participated
  • Current - Most recent value
  • Change - Difference between starting and current

Important Notes

Data Availability

  • Metrics start tracking from the day they're created
  • Historical data before metric creation won't be available
  • Starting values marked with an asterisk (*) indicate participation before metric tracking began
  • Daily updates ensure your reports show the latest information
  • If metrics are configured but data isn't ready yet, you'll see a "your metrics are coming soon" message

Best Practices

  1. Configure metrics when you first create your motion
  2. Set realistic goals to track progress effectively
  3. Review reports regularly to optimize your motion performance
  4. Use account-level metrics for business impact and user-level metrics for engagement monitoring

Troubleshooting

Q: Why don't I see data for my metric? A: Metrics only start collecting data after they're created. Historical data from before the metric was configured won't be displayed.

Q: Why is there an asterisk (*) next to some starting values? A: This indicates the participant joined the motion before you started tracking that metric. The starting value shown is from when metric tracking began, not when they first participated.

Q: Can I export my report data? A: Magnify has a Partner API that customers can use to fetch granular data about recipient interactions with emails sent from the Magnify email service. Outside of the API, we do not current offer a way to export report data to CSV.

Q: Why are some dates missing from my chart? A: If there's no data for a specific day (no activity occurred), that date won't have a data point on the chart.
